Risks and Effects of Abortion
Following an abortion, many women feel initial relief. Their crisis is over and life can return to “normal.” But for many other women, the crisis is not over, it has just started, and significant problems can develop months or even years later. There can be short term effects and immediate problems. Some of these may be heavy bleeding, perforation of the uterus, and infection.
There can be emotional effects from having an abortion. Some of these are depression, anger, guilt, regret, possibly leading to substance abuse, or eating disorders.
There can be long term effects from abortions. Some of these are infertility, hysterectomy, miscarriage, stillbirths, and ectopic pregnancies. Other long term effects of abortion might be the delivery of a premature birth and increasing the risk of breast cancer.
If you have not had an abortion, but are considering one, think through the process. Give yourself the gift of time. It is not urgent to make an immediate decision. Don’t let anyone pressure you into making a decision that you alone will have to live with and you alone may regret in the near future. Come in and talk with us at Elgin Pregnancy Care Center. We will explain fully the three options available to you and allow you to process them, ask questions, and take time to think. You are not alone. We will support you and care for you.
