What is the Gospel?
4 Crucial Gospel Truths Adapted from Greg Gilbert – What is the Gospel?
1. It is God to whom we are accountable.
Romans 1:18-21 – We did not create ourselves, that means we are neither self-reliant or self-accountable.
Genesis 1:26-28 – Each of us are the result of God’s plan and action, therefore, we have meaning and responsibility.
Genesis 2:16-17 – Because God created us, he has the right to tell us how to live.
Exodus 34:6-7 – Because that right was rejected God must intervene to be true to his nature which is both loving and just.
2. Our problem is that we have rebelled against God.
Romans 1:22-23/Romans 2:1 – Idolatry is loving anything more than you love God, even religion.
Romans 3:19-23- We are all sinners, rebels, idolators. We are all guilty.
Genesis 2:16-17/Genesis 5:1-32/Romans 6:23 – This guilt leads to death.
Ephesians 2:3/Matthew 15:19 – Our sinfulness is so much more than the sins we commit, it is our very nature.
Revelation 6:16-17/Revelation 19:15 – Our sinful nature has earned for us much more than God’s disapproval. It has earned us his eternal wrath.
Romans 3:19 – Knowing that we must stand before God to give an account of our sinful lives, what is our hope?
3. God’s solution to our sin is Jesus.
Romans 3:21 – There is a way for the guilty to stand innocent before and it has nothing to do with acting better, it is “apart from the law”
Romans 3:24 – Despite our rebellion, God makes a way through the blood of Jesus for the condemned to be justified.
Romans 3:21-26 – He satisfied God in every way that we could not.
2 Corinthians 5:21 – He lived the life that we could not and died the death that we deserve.
I Peter 2:24 – A righteous, perfect, holy life is the only thing that could satisfy the debt our sin placed us in.
4. How can we be included in this salvation?
Romans 3:22/Mark 1:15 - Faith and RepentanceWhat is faith? – We are trusting that as we are united with Christ, all of our sin is credited to Jesus and he dies in our place, and at the same time Jesus’ perfect life is credited to us.
What is repentance? – This does not mean that we no longer sin, but it does mean that we no longer live at peace with our sin. We are actively waging war through the power of the spirit against our sin.
Romans 4:1-25 – A picture of faith in Abraham.
